Mauritius Highlight

Mauritius a truly island paradise with something for everyone.

Island Facts

Mauritius is a small island situated in the Indian Ocean. Flying time from the UK direct is 12 hours.

In 2018 they celebrated 50 years of independence.

It is a cultural island,  The island has some of the best beaches, coastlines hotels and resorts also featuring mountains, stunning scenery, banana plantations and history. Population is roughly 1.2 million people who live in the countryside towns and villages with the Capitol Port Louis inhabitants of 150,000. Language is English, French, Creole and over 49% are Hindus. Chinese, English, French, Asian and  descendants from Indian people and are referred to as Indo-Mauritians.

Although Mauritius is an all year round destination with an average temperature of 25 and it still boasts seasons.  Best time to travel is September through to November being the hottest months and less rain fall. Janurary through to March is Cyclone season and the airport is sometimes closed. Winter months are June through to August, where the weather is still warm but cloudy.

With the weather in mind West and North parts of the island are the best, as the South and East pick up the tradewinds.

There are 4 sugar plantations and a sugar cane Rhumerie and tea fields are still on the Island.

The food is amazing, fresh fish such as Maki, Nigiri, Tuna, Dorado also beef steak are always on a menu – they fully cater for allergens and their Tea is a must.

The roads are good and you can easily hire a car as they drive on our side of the road. Also You are never to far from anywhere on the island.

My experience

Arrived to a warm welcome, the Mauritian people will go out of their way to help you.

The smell and scenery is truly stunning and the hotels are amazing quality ready for relaxation and recharge or if you a watersports/ land sports fan then this island has it all.

From Quad Biking to Zip lining to a visit to the Sacred Hindu lake and Temple, to visiting the interior of the island. This Island has it all.

I was privileged to see and visit:

the Hindu Temple and Lake in Grand Bassan

A restaurant high in the mountain range with views of the Southern part of the Island.

Black River Gorge and waterfalls to learn about the history.

A Rhumerie –  the only sugar cane process and tasting.

Seven Colours of the Earth, showing the formation of Mauritius.

2 Hour sunset cruise on board a  catermaran

Jean factory and local malls.

Statue of Mary

We were lucky to be see and be apart of the Hundu celebrations of the Ganesh festival 2018

Port Louis cultural tour – started at the La Citadelle, then went into the market area, then walked through the capital down to the craft markets and port side.Shopping is a must for souvenirs here.

The beaches and resorts are out of this world also the attention to detail and friendliness of everyone – will definitely go back

Hotels I stayed and visited

5* Le Heritage Le Telfair      +      Le Hertiage   Awali   – 2500 hectares of experiences

Le Telfair  – A small luxury hotel of the world – Very colonial set on a 1 km stretch of pristine beach. On arrival you are met with a breathtaking views of the resort, paradise beach, pool and cabanas. This hotel is definitely for couples, quiet, personal and full use of the spa, loads of sports facilities and golf club included. The rooms are large suite room

Awali – A family feel, with 3 rooms types on all inclusive basis. Rooms are in colonial blocks of six and are very spacious. This part of the resort boasts  the same beach front location with the beach club and watersports available. The bar area is very welcoming and has evening entertainment. The Awali also has a baby, kids and teen programme with fun for all.

Tuesday nights both hotels offer an truly African Experience- a meal set around a large fire with African dancers drummers fire eaters.  It only seats 50 so you would need to book and is an extra cost and worth doing.

As this resort is set in a nature reserve you can take a trip out walking, exploring or quad biking.

4* Tamassa

This Hotel is certainly set in a lovely tropical setting, ALL the rooms are sea facing and the beach is so clean and shallow for younger people – it has a large and open feel. Although this is a family hotel it feels relax and calm.

The Tamassa offers interconnecting rooms, 3 restaurants, 3 pools, and spa. There are 3 board basis from BB, HB to AI. From here you can drive or taxi to local restaurants.

My Favourite for a family hotel. The facilities and standard are excellent – the smells of tropical lilies hang in the air.

4* Veranda Paul and Virginie

Nestled on the North of the Island this adults only hotel is a romantic boutique hideaway. Very small and personal service, food is excellent. Spa and watersports are free. As this is close to Gran Gaube you would have access to the local village and shops, all in all a luxury personal feel close to getting out and about. All the rooms are bright and have sea views.

This larger resort lies on the North coast close to Grand Gaube. It boasts 2 tranquil beaches, lush tropical grounds lots of do or relax and recharge. 4* Baystone Boutique Hotel

This hotel only has 21 rooms a real chic boutique adults only spa hotel. Right on the board walk into Grand Baie, or 10 mins by taxi.. Being a small hotel there are two buildings with a track separating the two. We would request main building to guarantee a seaview. The Decor is very contemporary a good base if exploring on your own.

Ras Al Khaimah

Dear Jackie and everyone- I’m just writing to say a massive thank you for suggesting and organising this wonderful week in Ras Al Khaimah- quite honestly it just couldn’t have been better – the hotel the hotel staff the food the facilities the trips out and the weather- perfect so thank you again – back home tomorrow so back to reality!
Best wishes KP

New York

We had an amazing time, thanks! It was really helpful that you’d grouped stuff together and then we were able to put some itineraries together. I’d say we saw 90% of the things we wanted to and had already allowed enough stuff to do a trip another time.
The buildings were great- Empire State, Grand Central Station, Chrysler Building foyer, Top of the Rock, Radio City tour..we also went to see School of Rock on Broadway..did Times Sq, Ellens Stardust Diner, SoHo, Little Italy, Greenwich Village (loved that!!!), Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero, The Highline, Chelsea market, 5mins (literally) in Central Park, Comedy night, Yankees game, Moma shop, some cool diners etc etc etc 🙂
Just writing all of that has brought it nicely back… It’s a really easy place to navigate and as predicted we did loads of walking and a little bit on the subway. We’re really grateful for your help / tips and sorting it all which made it a very easy trip.
The only negative really was the hotel. The room was a bit more cosy than we expected,. I hate moaning about stuff and it didn’t detract from the overall trip and I guess that what we paid was just reflective of the level of accommodation you get. The location was absolutely spot on though which was a real bonus. Close to Broadway, close to restaurants, close to the subway and close to Central Park, so that was great.
So all in all, we had an amazing time. No doubt we’ll go back but probably in a couple of years when we’ve saved up again.
I hope all the places above have suddenly given you some good memories aswell 😊
Thanks again for all your help :-),

Botswana Trip

Following a trip to Kruger a few years ago, we’d always intended to take another safari trip and when we decided to go for it this year we contacted Kerrie, who’d arranged some excellent trips for us in the past.

We met up with Kerrie and a representative from Distinctive Africa to start planning. We concluded that Botswana would be our ideal destination, decided when we wanted to go and Distinctive Africa started to come up with draft itineraries. Once we’d finalised the itinerary we went ahead and booked.

The trip was absolutely great. Having flown in via Johannesburg, our first destination was Meno a Kwena – a lovely laid back camp. The view from our tent (and tent is probably understating the accommodation) was great. The drives into to Makgakgikgadi game park were superb with excellent sightings of a number of species including Zebra, Elephant, Giraffe and many birds.

We transferred to our next destination by light aircraft – exciting in itself. We then arrived at Moremi crossing in the Okavango Delta – again with great views from our accommodation, In the delta, one of the main ways of getting around is by Mokoro, a sort of large canoe which is poled through the shallow waterways. It’s a wonderful, peaceful experience and can give amazing, close views of wildlife A further light aircraft transfer took us to Kasane where we stayed close to the Chobe river and park. Again, some amazing sightings, in particular on the river. Finally it was on to Victoria Falls (the Zimbabwe side) for a relaxing end to the trip. The Falls are incredible. We rounded the trip off with a sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi

Altogether a wonderful trip. Many thanks to Kerrie and the team at Crowthorne Village Travel, Distinctive Africa and the various camps and lodges we stayed in!

Roger & Susie

Thankyou for helping us celebrate a special birthday in Copenhagen. Excellent choice of hotel on the waterfront, good flights, and all the usual support with tickets etc.

Even a bottle of bubbly in our room.

We would not dream of using anyone else.

The flight on the Dreamliner Heathrow to Perth was really good, seats/food etc, the time passed far quicker than we thought it would,  wouldn’t go back to stop over again.
Thank you for all your help really appreciate the personal service.
